Module 1
PMHCA Mental HealthIntroduction to Quality Improvement Science

This module introduces the foundational science of quality improvement (QI) and how it is used to strengthen pediatric mental health care access across settings. It helps build a shared understanding of how system-level improvement work begins and how it applies in practice.
Key Focus Areas: Introduction to QI science, identifying system-level opportunities for improvement, understanding variation in care processes, distinguishing QI from research, and foundational QI tools and data use.
What You Will Be Able To Do: Identify opportunities for improvement in your setting, define problems in system-level terms, select a focused project using basic prioritization criteria, use foundational data and tools to understand a process, and describe how QI applies to your role.
Getting Started: Begin with “What Is the Problem?” to explore how improvement opportunities are identified in real-world settings. These foundational concepts support all subsequent modules.
