ED clinicians EMSC Stakeholders Prehospital Quality Improvement Researchers

The Emergency Medical Services for Children (EMSC) Program and the EMSC Innovation and Improvement Center focus on improving outcomes for children in emergencies. Quality improvement (QI) science is at the heart of all our work. QI is the basis of EMSC’s Pediatric Readiness Projects for EDs and EMS and is the guiding framework for our QI Collaboratives.

Definition

QI, as defined by the Health Resources and Services Administration in 2011, consists of systematic and continuous actions that lead to measurable improvement in health care services and the health status of targeted patient groups.

Background

The QI movement reached prominence in the late 1990s and early 2000s through initiatives from the Institutes of Medicine (now the National Academies), the Joint Commission, the National Quality Forum, and others.
