Research Highlights Disparities in Access to Pediatric-Ready Emergency Care in Missouri
A newly published study by Dr. Bernardin and colleagues, “Child Opportunity Index Levels and Disparities in Access to Pediatric-ready Emergency Departments,” found significant inequities in access to pediatric-ready emergency care across Missouri. The research showed that children living in lower-resourced communities must travel substantially farther to reach the highest pediatric-ready emergency departments than children in more well-resourced areas.
The findings underscore the importance of Missouri EMSC’s ongoing efforts to strengthen pediatric readiness statewide, particularly in rural and underserved communities, and reinforce the need to expand pediatric readiness initiatives beyond major pediatric centers into community emergency departments.
