Module 4
What is it?
Measurement in QI means gathering and using data to understand whether your changes are leading to the outcomes you want — based on your AIM Statement.
Why is it important?
Without data, we can't tell if we're making things better. Measurement keeps improvement work focused, objective, and actionable.
How does it function in real life?
If your aim is to ensure 90% of children receive a behavioral health screening within 30 minutes of triage, you'll need to measure the percentage of eligible patients who receive the screening — and track how that percentage changes over time.
⚠️ Key Point: Measurement for improvement is different from measurement for accountability. Your data still needs to be consistent and accurate – but it doesn't need to be comprehensive to be useful. Start with a small, simple measure you can track reliably, and build from there. Small and simple beats comprehensive and complex.
