EIIC: Emergency Medical Services for Children | Innovation and Improvement Center

Targeted Issues

The goal of the Targeted Issues Program is to support strategies to improve the quality of pediatric care delivered in emergency care settings across the continuum of emergency care through the implementation of pediatric emergency care research and innovative cross-cutting projects.  Targeted Issues programs translate research into practice and improve pediatric health outcomes related to emergency care (e.g., reduced severity of asthma, decreased hospitalization for trauma).

The primary type of support provided to Targeted Issues grantees is product development and dissemination. If they choose, each Targeted Issues grant can receive one-on-one consultation specific to organizing product content, identifying product target audiences and partners who may have an interest in the product, designing the product, and disseminating the product. In addition, training and consultation is provided related to grants management, performance measure implementation, publication tracking, and grant results dissemination.

Grants Resources

In addition to successfully implementing and evaluating the approved grant objectives, project managers/directors are also responsible for completing a number of "grants management" requirements, such as complying with financial reporting requirements that are clearly defined in the EMSC program guidance. Resource Development and Dissemination

The EIIC works individually with Targeted Issusd grantees to provide assistance in product development and dissemination. These products may take the form of a toolkit, interactive pdf, webcast, or online training program. For more information or to receive assistance in product development and dissemination, please contact us.

Targeted Issues products designed by the EMSC NRC include the Pediatric Resuscitation Checklist Toolkit and the online training course Pediatric Disaster Triage: Doing the Most Good for the Most Patients in the Least Time.

A Product Development and Dissemination Fact Sheet outlines the basic steps in working with the EIIC on product development.

Grant Resources

The following resources have either been developed or identified by the EMSC Program to help fund or manage their grant:

  • EMSC Targeted Issues Grants, 2016 - 2019 Fact Sheet The two-page fact sheet provides a brief description for each of the six new Targeted Issues grants awarded in 2016.
  • EMSC Targeted Issues Grants, 2013 Fact Sheet The two-page fact sheet provides a brief description for each of the six new Targeted Issues grants awarded in 2013.
  • Targeted Issues Database. In 2013, the EMSC NRC created the Targeted Issues Historical Database to track activities of the federal Targeted Issues grant program. Current and prospective grantees are encouraged to review all previous Targeted Issues projects and, when possible, build upon prior grantees' work to increase the depth and breadth of pediatric emergency care.
  • ROI Investigator Resource Portal. Use this portal to find resources for R01s, the National Institutes of Health’s standard independent research grant.
