Pediatric Education and Advocacy Kit (PEAK): Multisystem Trauma

trauma

Trauma is the leading cause of death for U.S. children aged 1 to 18, surpassing all other causes combined (Coalition for National Trauma Research; GAO). Common causes include motor vehicle crashes, falls, and sports-related injuries, with most injuries treated in hospital emergency departments (GAO). Notably, 43% of children live more than 30 miles from a pediatric trauma center, where specialized care significantly improves outcomes compared to adult trauma centers or general emergency departments.

PEAK: Multisystem Trauma aims to optimize pediatric trauma care across all trauma centers and emergency departments by providing resources to improve care and support patients and families. Research shows that Pediatric Readiness, or preparing for children's health needs, can reduce mortality in injured children by up to 60% (Newgard et al., JAMA Network Open, 2023).
