New PECC learning module highlights pediatric safety in EDs
- Published March 31, 2025
Patient Safety Awareness Week (March 9–15) brings renewed attention to the critical role of pediatric emergency care coordinators (PECCs) in ensuring high-quality, safe care for children in emergency settings. Just in time for this annual observance, the fourth module in a learning series for emergency department (ED) PECCs has been released, focusing specifically on pediatric safety and medication safety.
This new resource is part of an ongoing effort to support PECC development and enhance Pediatric Readiness across EDs nationwide.
Why PECCs Matter in Pediatric Emergency Care
Research has shown that the presence of a designated PECC is the single most important factor in improving a facility’s Pediatric Readiness score. PECCs serve as vital champions for pediatric-specific policies, training, and system-level improvements in both EDs and EMS agencies.
The new learning module is the fourth in a growing series designed to:
- Strengthen the confidence and capabilities of ED-based PECCs
- Provide practical strategies for integrating pediatric safety practices
- Support ongoing quality improvement and patient safety efforts
This latest module focuses on key topics such as:
- Identifying safety risks for pediatric patients in the ED
- Best practices in medication safety
- Tools and strategies to improve safety culture and reduce harm
