Project Overview
Acute trauma can provide a teachable moment for injury prevention of adolescents. The goals of this project are to (1) develop, implement, and evaluate the effectiveness of an emergency department's ability to decrease risk-taking behavior among adolescents; (2) use a rigorous research design in a high-risk population, with the goal of developing a program that can serve as a national model for injury prevention in the emergency department for this age group; (3) implement brief interventions in the emergency room to try to decrease adolescents' high-risk behavior including lack of seatbelt use, lack of bike helmet use, riding with a driver who had been drinking, binge drinking, and weapon carrying.
