Any EMS or fire-rescue agency responding to public 911 calls was asked to complete the assessment, including both transporting and non-transporting services.

Nearly 30% of agencies that responded to the assessment serve rural and frontier communities. In addition, over 40% rely on at least some volunteers to staff ambulances.

Advanced life support (ALS)/intermediate life support (ILS) agencies made up the majority of respondents (72%), of which approximately half (53%) were fire-based agencies.

Agencies were categorized by the number of pediatric calls per year (low: < 12, medium: 13-100, medium-high: 101-599, high: > 600). The assessment found that Pediatric Readiness was higher among agencies with higher pediatric volume.
