Family-centered care is a foundational component of high‑quality pediatric emergency services—whether delivered in the prehospital environment or within the hospital. In moments of crisis, children rely not only on skilled medical care but also on the support, presence, and expertise of their family. Empowering families as partners in care improves communication, enhances safety, supports better decision-making, and strengthens trust between providers and those they serve.
For EMS clinicians, integrating family-centered approaches may include involving caregivers in assessment when appropriate, supporting family presence during resuscitation or procedures, and ensuring compassionate communication throughout transport. In hospital settings, family-centered care helps create continuity, reduces anxiety for both the child and caregiver, and supports shared understanding of treatment goals.
Ohio EMSC is committed to advancing family-centered care statewide. More resources and tools to support family-centered care will be added to this page soon. Please check back regularly for updates.
