Ohio Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinators (PECCs)

Ohio PECC Logos

Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinators (PECCs)—often referred to as pediatric champions—play a critical role in improving how children receive emergency care across both EMS agencies and Emergency Departments (EDs).

Ohio EMSC encourages all EMS agencies and EDs to designate and register a PECC as a foundational step toward advancing pediatric readiness.

A Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinator (PECC) is an individual designated to help ensure that pediatric patients receive safe, effective, and developmentally appropriate emergency care—every time, in every setting.

PECCs do not need to be pediatric specialists or full‑time coordinators. Instead, they serve as local leaders and connectors, helping translate national pediatric emergency care recommendations into day‑to‑day practice.

Across both EMS and ED environments, PECCs commonly support pediatric readiness by focusing on each of the pediatric readiness domains.

National research and policy guidance consistently show that agencies with designated PECCs are more prepared to care for children.

In Emergency Departments, the presence of PECCs is associated with double-digit percentage improvements in Pediatric Readiness scores, which are linked to improved outcomes for children. While prehospital research is ongoing, EMS agencies with PECCs demonstrate higher pediatric readiness across key operational areas—even in low‑volume or resource‑limited settings.

Simply put: PECCs are one of the strongest drivers of pediatric readiness across the emergency care continuum.

While the PECC role looks different in EMS agencies and Emergency Departments, the goal is the same: to ensure children receive the same high-quality, effective emergency care regardless of where they live or seek treatment.

Together, PECCs help create consistent, connected pediatric emergency care systems across Ohio.

Register as an Ohio Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinator

Ohio EMSC encourages all EMS agencies and Emergency Departments to formally designate and register their Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinator (PECC).

To support and recognize this role, Ohio EMSC has recently developed and released Ohio‑specific PECC logos for EMS and ED settings, helping agencies visibly identify and formalize their PECCs.

Registering a PECC with Ohio EMSC helps formalize the role within your agency and connects PECCs to state‑level support, recognition, and pediatric readiness initiatives.

By registering, current and newly designated PECCs receive:

  • Official Ohio PECC designation
    • Access to Ohio‑specific EMS or ED PECC logos for agency use
  • Virtual Certificate of Acknowledgement
    • Recognizing the individual as their agency’s designated PECC
    • Supporting role clarity and formality
