Project Overview

Our program focuses on developing and sustaining the Kentucky (KY) EMSC initiative within the State EMS system by working toward fulfillment of the HRSA Performance Measures (PMs). This is done through coalition building, pediatric public policy education, resource development, and funding to reduce child and youth disability and death due to severe illness and injury. The project goals are to ensure that 1) state-of-the-art emergency medical care for the ill or injured child and adolescent is available when needed; 2) pediatric services are appropriately integrated into the existing EMS and trauma systems and backed by optimal resources; and 3) the entire spectrum of emergency services, including primary prevention of illness and injury, acute care, and rehabilitation, is provided to children and adolescents at the same level as adults.

Kentucky also received funding for the EMS for Children State Partnership Rural Expansion Program grant. The goals of this project are to increase the number of rural hospitals recognized by the statewide pediatric medical recognition program from seven to 14 facilities, increase weighted pediatric readiness scores for all participating facilities by at least 20%, and engage at least 50% of rural EMS agencies without an identified Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinator (PECC) in the catchment area of participating hospitals in project activities to encourage PECC designation.
